Impact and Changing Roles Discussion

By Jaco, Christy, Hammond

What is the impact of ICT on students learning in Hong Kong?
Positive impact
• Exposure in learning with ICT
• Searching information
• Facilitate project-based learning
• Competency in using software programmes

Negative impact
• Discipline on concentration
• Computers only available at computer labs
• Inadequate resource for e-learning information, teacher training (e.g. examples to share with people)
• ICT is not core area in senior secondary schools curriculum

Does the student's role need to change in Hong Kong?
The role of students will change from listener and follower to knowledge builder and to be able to determine their learning goals as well as to reflect their own learning. The teachers are expected to coach their students.

What can you do to help this paradigm shift?
- Change from teacher-centred approach to student-centred approach
- Include ICT in the core in the senior secondary school curriculum
- Enrich e-learning resources for all subjects
