Reflect, rethink and reform
REFLECT on what is the impact of ICT and Curriculum Reform on teachers in Hong Kong?
ICT has brought about many changes in the HK educational system. Teachers can no longer rely on the traditional models of teachers in the past. We cannot any longer be a “provider of knowledge”, but we must be a facilitator or a guider of knowledge.
RETHINK Does the teacher’s role need to change in Hong Kong? Put forth some strategies to overcome obstacles for learning.
Most knowledge is now available and can be accessible through the Internet. Hence, one of the major role of teachers, now, is to properly guide students into discovering these knowledge and also must guide students to screen and critique information.
In my view, a teacher must be open, and be willing to work together with students into helping them find and discover knowledge. She must be willing accept that she will NOT be able to have the answers to all questions, but must have the skills and the expertise in finding answers.
REFORM Imagine what it will be like in 2015. What will have changed? How might you have helped with this change?
There should be no more school buildings and no classrooms. Students should be able to learn online and at the own pace. They should have reliable and fast Internet connections and affordable PC equipments. There will be no more “teachers”, only “coaches” or “facilitators”. Students should be able to learn “experts” throughout the world and their learning will no longer be limited by the knowledge of their classroom teachers.
